Centurion: Defender Of Rome it is a superb strategy game. In fact, Rome: Total War is inspirated in this game.

Hm, not sure it really shows that. Centurion has never been considered a "deep" game even when it was brand new.
I just recently replayed this one and it was kind of a mixed bag:
My nostalgia was in full swing, it felt just like in the good old days. The graphics, the music still have their charme and distinct style. The gameplay was easy to grasp again and the scenario certainly has its draw. And hey there is that special scene featuring good old Cleopatra which still kind of holds up.
Yet I felt bored rather quickly because of the repetition. In the end you just have a bunch of battles (which you cannot really influence), do some gladiatorial events (which are far too simple) and races (just keep right and whip that horse till kingdom come)… well and that is it. There is a bit of diplomacy and very low level financial juggling involved but they are far too primitive to be of a real challenge.
I had my share of fun with it nevertheless, but it is a prime example that especially strategy games have come a very long way by now.
