You certainly can count the number of games which successfully maintain the balance between the old (to count as a sequel) and the new (to be a game of its own) on one hand. One of the few that mastered this tightrope walk is Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny. And the best part of it is that there are signs of a very similar conflict in the story of the game itself.
