The one that Mole posted works fine. The first few seconds are corrupted as Windows seems to try and find the codec, but then all is well after then.

Lavasoft's Ad aware successfully removes spyware installed by divx or from any other source however divx will refuse to encode videos if it detects the components were removed.

Yeah, well, but you probably don't have such a high-class porn need, so you don't have as many videos as certain other members :P

To anyone interested: FFDShow works fine for me for watching DivX or xvid movies, although it hasn't been updated in a long while I've never come across a video I couldn't watch because of an outdated codec. I installed it on this computer directly after formatting and reinstalling Windows, so there was never any other comparable codec installed as far as I know. Of course, I can't guarantee it will work flawlessly for anyone else. I also don't know whether or not it is legal to use this software, that's honestly something I hadn't thought about.

Yes, that's the one. It's also the one that uses ActiveX controls to install itself on your computer without your knowledge, if you are using MSIE.

Just last Saturday I was running my regular AdAware sweeps in the office, and found that new Gator versions also try to hijack your browser. However, as intrusive as the software is, it's got nothing on Alexa, which I found on all computers but two - mine and a coworker's who I finally convinced to use Opera.

Isn't that the one which stores your root passwords and then sends them to some company? ;)

We made this happen through an association with the Gator Advertising and Information Network (GAIN).

Wow, Gator is one of the most infamous spyware companies as far as I know... :o

I always archive some previous versions and burn them on CDs for the case that Oldversion.com is down. ;)

That's why God invented Oldversion.com!

(Well, it wasn't really God, but you get the picture.)

Why not just taking a previous version of the regular Divx?

Argh. Bad News for me. I had to reinstalled Windows and it killed off DivX. I guess no more movie watching (those encoded with DivX) for me.

JScript? That's being widely used, e.g. by the website of a popular Belgian radio station :P

Ok, compared to "Windows Media Codec" (?), Divx might still be the better alternative. ;)

I hope people won't switch to another codec, because we all know what codec that would be...

Actually, that's not very surprising - it was getting worse and bloated with every version anyway. It's just annoying that people most likely won't switch to another codec because Divx has become so common.

I'm not working with videos myself very much. Some time ago I had to convert a wmv file that didn't run because I don't have/want Windows Spyware Player that includes the codec; I encoded it with Xvid (which is open source) and quality and size were really good. :)

Mole: Is your link some hacked vresion of Divx? If it is, there's still the question whether they include the frequent updates of Divx...
