Any board which claims it can is lying. You are very likely right that it would be a good idea not to have those two links up there when logged in in order to not encourage such behaviour, but what to put there instead, then? I can hardly leave the space empty, it'd look awful. Quote: reset button You're preaching to the choir about using the keyboard, though you have to acknowledge most people abhor keyboard use and don't know the first thing about it. Anyway, as you can see, I've moved the buttons around a bit. Try the 'Quote' link on my post and then the regular 'Reply' button to see the different versions. I think this is as clear as it can get: the buttons on the right do a submit, the one on the left (if it is there) a reset. Setting colours for form elements is, unfortunately, pointless. Some years ago, a very evil person had the idea to have the underlying OS control the style of those elements. Some OS' still allow to override this, others don't. Really, I support the use of lethal force against whoever put this into browsers - it's a terrible idea! It always looks like crap! Yet, I have to live with it, because even if I made my own browser which didn't support this behaviour, people'd still use those other crap browsers which do ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 740 | Not sure about replacing the reg/lost pass links. I think it'd look ok without them, or maybe move the log out link over there (or move the "logged in as.." message up there, and put the log out link underneath, in the place the logged in message currently is). Changing the style of form elements is far from pointless. Any browser which supports css lets you change the form elements, regardless of the OS. You can include a style attribute in the form tag, apply it to all submit buttons, apply it to anything with the "submit" class, etc. ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11098 | That one's obviously not using the Aqua toolkit. The Mac Safari and basically most other Mac browsers use it, and it will always look like the buttons on the left of your screenshot, no matter what you do. Doesn't look good on any site, because it never fits, but that's what Mac users are stuck with. Then again, we all know Mac users love being told what they're supposed to like or not like, so they're probably happy with it ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 740 | Didn't know there was more than 1 webkit. Maybe it's just that they finally brought the webkit into the modern age? This is my safari browser's info: AppleWebKit/525.13 Version/3.1 Safari/525.13.3 ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11098 | This has nothing to do with the Webkit rendering engine, but with the toolkit used to draw the interface itself (i.e. the buttons next to the address bar and so on). The same toolkit is used to to draw form elements. On most Unix systems, that's the GTK engine (or QT engine), on Macs, that's the Aqua engine and on Windows it's whatever-it's-called-on-windows. So, it's not really restricted to Webkit-based browsers. Camino, which uses Gecko, still uses Aqua and is thus cursed by non-fitting form elements as well. Just like many, many other browsers on that crap OS. In any case, the real mistake in this stems from the link between OS toolkits and website elements as I pointed out before. I'm seriously baffled any halfway intelligent person could see any advantage in that. Edit: For the record, I just tried it out with the latest Mac Safari and Camino five minutes ago - it's still the same. ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! ----- Edited by Mr Creosote at 15:09 on November 17th, 2008 |

Member Master Gumby Posts: 82 | It's much later, but I did say I'd respond more to this later, so... Quote: Well, ok, so now I've heard how you saw it and you heard how I interpreted it (i.e. that I never saw what you meant by 'collaborating' and didn't see any potential for benefits). Obviously, we got off on the wrong foot there - why not just try again from a blank sheet? I mean it, just put the hateful comments from my side and yours aside for a moment, tell me what you actually want to get done (for what purpose), and we'll see how it develops. It's that easy. Before this was written I had some ideas, but now I've sort of forgotten them. But I will let you know if I remember again. And I appreciate your well thought out response. Quote: Long story, short synopsis: Just explain what you're trying to do (not just 'I need a list of all CD games' - if I don't know what it's for, I simply won't bother; I get all kinds of strange requests all the time, and if I don't get an explanation what something is for or if there isn't any benefit for the site as a whole, there's no way I'm going to give a positive reply), and I'll listen. I would post the links on my site - which would in effect bring a few people over here. So that would be the benefit for this site. I'm just not sure what the benefit would be to my site, unless you linked to it for some reason. ----- ----- Edited by Gargantuan Orangutan at 04:13 on July 17th, 2009 |
