Overreviewed games?

As noted in the news, do you think we should have a limit of how many reviews to accept per game? We have one with four reviews and a couple with three. Honestly, my impression is that usually, these additional reviews don't really add much information/value to the game entries, but rather repeat what has already been said. (I'm bringing this up now as this latest one from RetroBunny is actually a bit of an exception, as it does give the old description a bit of a new spin.)

Discuss, please!

Well, if Stunts had... like "252" similar reviews, I would agree. But 4?! I don't see your point. Of course, reviews do contain redundant information, as all reviewers talk about the very same game.

One possible answer for sure is the limit being 252 ;)

For sure, it's not always the same. Take Duke Nukem 3D. That third review, what does it add? You can go through it, point by point. Each observation can be checked off in the earlier reviews.

The facts being the same is not a problem per se. But if there is no real evaluation of he aspects, no interpretation, what's the point?

Ah, a rather controversial suggestion.

On the one hand you are right of course: The more reviews, the more repetition and after a while it seems like beating a dead horse. And I have to admit that sometimes, when I see several reviews, I tend to only read the first one or those which obviously stand out.

On the other hand you are simplifying things a bit: Just because there are several reviews, it does no have to mean that they are necessarily bad or have to repeat each other. I think the Duke Nukem 3D reviews are a bad example, because two of them are not that particularilly good. Just take The Secret of Monkey Island, which has 3 reviews too (if you think cross paltform): Each one seems unique, each one adds something to the bigger picture.

Also keep in mind that when you set any kind of limit you might keep someone from writing a review that is actually better than the others or at least keep someone from being creative and contributing to the site.

And I think the actual problem is not so much how many reviews there are, but rather that the more reviews, the higher the chances, that some of them are mediocre.

Still, I guess I understand where you are coming from. One possible solution would be to move reviews to the archive, if there are too many of them. Though it would be hard to judge or justify which ones it should be.

Or I may channel that person's energy into something more worthwhile. E.g. instead of reviewing an already extensively covered game again, rather to enter one which isn't on the site yet. The argument of the nth review probably being better than the others is true, on the other hand, of course…

OK, admittedly, maybe my problem is more with quality than quantity. But this brings up back to the oldest question in the book: how to judge quality and still be fair about it? And how to avoid too set the bar too high?

Example: check out the reviews by dogchainx. Those from 2012/2013 are alright, but all follow the same rather simple structure. What he wrote in 2015-2017, on the other hand, is totally excellent! Would we have those reviews without having accepted the first ones? I doubt it.

That, I can't imagine. Either something is accepted or not. It shouldn't always remain in a "temporarily accepted, but we may reconsider later" state. Just see how it is with those legacy reviews which are too short. It's been how many years since we tried replacing them? We never succeeded.

You are right about the 'temporary' review of course, archiving 'bad' reviews was just a spontaneous thought.

One of the problems I see with a review limit is how to communicate it: Say someone has written a review without looking how many of them there currently are (which I think will be rather common) and now they notice that they cannot share them because there are too many for this particular game already. Would not this be rather disappointing?

Nevertheless we could include warnings or hints when trying to review a game with a certain amount of reviews, that maybe picking another game would be wiser?

One possible concern I'd have about limitation is that it may prevent some people from contributing, especially those primarily familiar with popular titles like Monkey Island or Myst. If previously reviewed games are a newbie's only logical way in, I don't think they should be prohibited outright from contributing.

Maybe if a new review is too similar to earlier ones, a moderator could notify the submitter and suggest changes to make it more original? For example: "Other reviews have already covered Point A extensively, perhaps focus more on Point B?"

Might be worth a try once in a while or more blatant cases of repititis, you should keep in mind though, that most reviewers do not react too positive on rewrite suggestions. And it also holds the problem on having to judge what is original or not.
