Playing Mortal Kombat is a pure pleasure. Or pain, depending how well you are doing. The game offers everything a lover of fighting games could wish for - fast paced action, tons of moves, punches and kicks, all of which can get combined, decent opponents, each with special attacks and a lot of blood. In addition, some extras, such as small skill tests and the introduction of all characters makes the game very well rounded.

This game pretends to have a story, which you may know well from the movie. To save humanity, you have to win a tournament. Defeat means death, while victory gives you the “pleasure” to get into another match. Altogether, you will have five credits, which you can use to resurrect your dead character or choose a new one. This character then continues where the previous one left off. This, however, leaves space for advanced strategy, as the order of combats is different for each character, and so you can avoid the worst opponents by chosing the right character once your old one dies. With your character, you'll have four direcions of movement, two punches, two kicks and a block. All these can get combined to some very interesting fighting techniques.

On the downside, the game is slightly unbalanced. Even though the creators tried to balance it by awarding different damage potential to each punch and kick, sometimes it does not work. For example, an overhead kick (back+high kick) has less power than a low punch (down+low punch). The biggest problem, however, is that straight punches, while causing very little damage, can be so fast that you will have no chance to retreat - you'll be locked in those punches. More than once my completely healthy character died under an onslaught of such punches. Still, the game is well worth playing.
