Digger was created by Windmill Software in 1983 and released as a copy-protected, bootable 5.25" floppy disk for the IBM PC. It was designed to work on an IBM XT/AT with a CGA adapter; it relies on the CPU for timing, so it will run too fast on newer PCs.
A remastered version of the game has been released under the GNU GPL, with the approval of the original author. It can run on modern PCs and has been ported to other platforms as well.
It can be downloaded from http://www.digger.org.

The player controls Digger, who can dig horizontal and vertical tunnels in an underground maze.
At various points of the maze there are emeralds and bags of gold, which give points when collected.
There are two type of monsters in Digger: nobbin and hobbin.
Nobbin is the form in which monsters initially appear: they chase Digger in the tunnels the player made.
But when nobbins cross each other a few times, they become hobbins, and they gain the ability to dig tunnels, collect emeralds and gold.
Digger can kill monsters by shooting them with his gun, or by dropping bags of gold on them.
When he kills enough monster he can collect a power-up, which makes him invincible for a limited amount of time.
The players wins if he collects all the emeralds, or if he kills all the monsters.
There are several different levels layouts, and, progressing in the game, the monster become faster, the gun recharges more slowly and the power-ups disapper faster.
Every 20000 points the player gets a bonus life, but it's not possible to collect more than 4 spare lives.

The best score is by Roman Tomczyk, with 3,333,300, level 353 (http://www.digger.org/fame.html).

Digger has become a classic, thanks to its simple but addictive gameplay.
It's a great game to play when you have a little spare time.

Heh, this was epic... but excruciatingly tedious at the same time, and i never spent too much time playing it, although it's an aknowledged classic and we should all bow to it :)

Cool, I wasn't aware that this game had such a cult following. :)

Never played it that much myself, but I still remember playing it for the first time like it was yesterday: Cool Popcorn-music (which didn't sound half bad considering the PC-Speaker) and a strange duck on wheels shooting its head at even stranger monsters.
