Review by Underdogs:
One of the most unique adventures ever made, Loom is a brainchild of Brian Moriarty (the brain behind Infocom's Wishbringer and Trinity). The game's intriguing plot is enough to ensure its "classic" status: you are Bobbin Threadbare, the mysterious "Loom child" and member of the Weaver Guild who must embark on a perilous journey to follow his guild members who were turned into geese and flew away from the Loom island. Moriarty raised the game's originality even higher by giving us no inventory. Instead, all puzzles in the game are based on "spells" cast by playing notes on a magical staff. Add a wonderfully memorable soundtrack, and the game is destined to stay on my hard drive. The enhanced CD-ROM version, as you can see from the screenshot, has vastly improved VGA graphics and great voice acting. Definitely a must-have for all adventure enthusiasts.

Note: The version on this site is the "patch" package that will upgrade a legitimate copy of Loom floppy version to full CD-ROM version, which adds 256-color VGA graphics and full speech to the game. The patch is put up here only as a last resort, as LucasArts cannot distribute the CD-ROM version due to existing licensing agreement with Mindscape (which is now defunct). Basically the company would still be selling the CD-ROM version if they could. To use this patch, you *must* have a legitimate floppy version of Loom - which is included in the "Classic Adventures Archive" compilation sold at LucasArts store. If you try to use this patch on a "pirated" version of Loom floppy, it will not work. The original floppy version (not the Classic Adventures patck) of the game shipped with a very nice 30-minute audio prologue to the game on cassette tape, which you can download as a MP3 file here [6MB].
