Barbie

A game simulating the life of Barbie... what an amazing idea! Her boyfriend Ken calls and asks her out on a date. He might want to take her to the beach, to the gym, to the prom or to a restaurant. Of course, Barbie agrees. Now, she has one hour to choose the right look for this occasion.

The 1980s obviously were the cultural high point of humanity as a whole. However, it has to be admitted, not everything which came out of that decade was great. For instance, there was Hip Hip, Rap and Breakdancing. Urk! Now, if this is my view on this "phenomenon", what qualifies me to review a game called Breakdance? Nothing, really; I do it because I can. Oh, and we're really committed to show the dark sides of classic gaming as well (phew, last minute excuse).

California Games

Genre: Sport
Rating: 2/6

California, as films tell us, is all beaches and hot women but this games pretends otherwise, they also have their own brand of sports. Sports for cool people, obviously but sports which, lucky us, we now have the chance to try without leaving our homes.

Back in the 90s, 'action toys' were the market. The leading company was Mattel with their action figures ('Barbie for boys'). And there were these toy cars. Completely unlike the car models which existed before and served only 'museum values', these little metal (or plastic if it had to be cheap) vehicles were actually designed for children playing with them! I, for example, held 'ramming contests': causing two cars to crash frontally and the one which falls upside down loses.

Impossible Mission

Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6

"Another visitor... stay a while... stay forever!"

This is how Elvin Atombender welcomes you to his lair. Mr Atombender is the stereotype of a mad scientist. He's currently plotting to destroy the world (once again). You are a secret agent with the mission to stop him. You leave the elevator, enter a room and...

Snowstrike

Rating: 3/6

System: Atari ST

This is one I spent a lot of time with back in the days. At first glance, it's a simple aerial shooter, but there's more to it than that. Even though it's far from being a realistic simulation, there's a certain feel to the controls and general gameplay that draws you in, and before you know it, you really ARE crack pilot Butch Slayer, codename Fifi.

Winter Games

Genre: Sport
Rating: 1/6

System: PC

Dear Readers, welcome to our live coverage of Winter Games! The organisers could not have chosen a better day for the event: Look at that ńĆerenkov blue sky, ever so slightly marred by small cloudy squares of brilliant white! The sight is even clear enough to catch a glimpse of the far away Purple Peaks.

World Karate Championship

Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 3/6

A well-known classic from the arcade from 1986. Business as usual: Fight against your opponents who become more stronger from round to round and try to collect as many point as possible...

You start as Karateka with the white belt - you can choose Egypt or Australia. It does not matter at all because the starting location has no influence on the game itself. After 3 rounds of fighting you either go to New York or to Rio de Janeiro - and that already was the little excursion because after round no. 3 the background graphic does not change any more. At least as far as I could play...
