Valiant Hearts: The Great War

ValHeart01.jpg
Ubisoft Montpellier Studios / Ubisoft 2014
Genre: Action, Adventure, Puzzle
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

While I watch my character walking slowly towards the sunrise at the end of Valiant Hearts: The Great War, I take a look back at the road that has brought me here. Considering that for the most part it lead through the battlefields of World War I, the journey was surprisingly rich in variety, and it entailed even some nice memories besides all the horror. Yet it has been exactly those contrasts, these emotional ups and downs, which make these sensations so intense. Its beginning seems almost a bit unreal now, but soon the story will come to an end, and I cannot remember when I had such a feeling of accomplishment at the end of a computer game.

Vaxine

U.S. Gold 1990
Genre: Puzzle, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Sometimes them game-programmers really demand a lot of imagination - who would think of a human body and virii looking at this game? In Vaxine you are the last line of defense protecting important cells against agressive virii. Such a virus appears in 3 possible colors and can be eliminated by shooting at it with a little ball of the same color. To make this clear right now - at first you will think you got a cool fast action-game here. You will be frustrated soon because you won't survive very long. The game will just get faster and faster if you want it to and you won't be able to defend your cells since you will always miss the virii you try to shoot. You need to think of some basic strategies. Most important things are the black gates. Just drive through one and everything will freeze for one minute (remember to drive through one again before the minute runs out). Now you can search for the next virus and get into a good shooting position before you shoot at it (which will unfreeze everything). While this is enough for the first level you will need to eliminate the virus-producers (flat cells moving around on the floor) first in the higher levels. You will hear a special sound-effect each time one of them appears and that means you have to find the next black gate fast to have time to search for that little bastard.

Rating: 3.7/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

This review is part of The Review Roundup - Round 2: Games Related to the Undead

A sudden cloud of bats splashing in your airplane forces you to land in a lost, dark and small valley. A place ruled by a vampire, and where, ignoring it, you have started to fulfil a prophecy of freedom.

Vengeance of Excalibur

Synergistic / Virgin 1992
Genre: Adventure, RPG, Strategy
Rating: 3.5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

[Wandrell] When Excalibur is stolen, it's clear who is behind the crime. The… Oh, wait. The Muslims? Actually, here we have a game based on Arthurian myths, which by itself is in no way is a new thing, but it manages to actually give it an original twist.

Vermeer – Die Kunst zu erben

V01.png
Ascaron 1997
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

I, nephew of a rich uncle who lives in Berlin close to the Brandenburg Gate, set out in the chaos of the first world war to look all over the world for his stolen pictures. No, this isn't an Adventure game… neither a role-playing game or anything similar, but rather a solid economic simulation ;) Yes, the plot isn't so bad and it would fit perfectly into another genre…

Versailles

versaill_001.png
Cryo 1997
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

To those who tend to be bored by reality, video games come as the ultimate "emergency eject". Most just take games as they are: for this people it would be the same to be passing time by with a crossword puzzle at hand. There are other persons who really like to forget for an hour or two (extreme cases, for a month or two) everyday life and its "problems": bills to pay, work to be done, garbage to be disposed of… All the compelling adventures of the so-called Modern Life.

Vestiges

Josephine Wynter 2011
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 0/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Interpreter

You awake in a grave, with no memory of who you are or what happened to you...

You know what that reminds me of? Roger Corman and his Poe filmes from the 1960s. Escaping from your own grave after premature burial might make for a cool game – Corman's Premature Burial even unknowingly suggests some puzzles in the scene where the protagonist explains the safeguards of his crypt and the dream sequence when all of these safeguards fail would be a good blueprint to design a game around.

Vette!

vette01.png
Spectrum HoloByte 1989
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Vette is a racing game that speaks for itself, you can drive a Corvette against other people. You get to drive in San Francisco and it only has 4 courses to race. The key is to get to the finish line anyway you can. You begin by selecting a Corvette Model like the stock, ZR1, and has the modified ones like the Callaway Twin turbo and the Corvette Sledge Hammer. You can also press space to do a dyno test to see how fast the car can go. While racing, you can get pulled over by a cop and you could come up with excuses why you were driving fast (like "my accelerator got stuck" or "rushing to the hospital to see my wife" or even "i gotta go to the bathroom so bad" then you get the ticket anyway.

Victor Loomes

loomes01.png
Promotion Software / LBS 1993
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

"Victor Loomes" is a private eye in the Chicago of the 1920s. And his sponsor is..... the LBS (a German "Bausparkasse" - if you don't know what that is, visit their homepage for a good laugh)! If you're asking where the temporal (at that time, the LBS didn't exist) and local (the LBS doesn't exist anywhere outside Germany) link is, you've already understood the whole problem of the game.

Victory

MDF 1996
Genre: Action, Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Victory is a real time strategy game which takes place in the area of today's Poland, roughly in the year 1000 A.D. Hence the original title Polanie. The game's first release came on six 3.5" floppies and a CD version followed shortly after. The reviewed version comes from the Gold Games 1 compilation released in 1996. On CD #9, this gem of computer entertainment could be found. The game was developed by a Polish company called "MDF", about which I could not find out anything. In Germany, the game was distributed by TopWare Interactive under the name of Victory.
