9:05

90501.png
Adam Cadre 2000
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

You wake up from the phone ringing. A voice tells you you were supposed to start your presentation at the office at 9. Your gold watch tells you it's already 9:05. Apparantely having slept in your soiled clothes, you ponder your next move...

A Journey into Xanth

jixanth01.png
Neil Sorenson 1993
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

This is a must for every Xanth-Fan! I always loved the great books of Piers Anthony and searched hard for any computer-games based on it. Long before I was able to get my hands on the graphical adventure I found this game (and lost it when my harddisk crashed).

Abenteuer Europa

euro_000.png
SPD 1994
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Before he was banished from public view in order to stay in the pool or 'fly' over the fields forever, Rudi Scharping was the head of one of the biggest political parties in Germany: the SPD. In 1994, he managed to lose the most important election in spite of all polls having been in favour of the SPD mere weeks earlier. A few months before that, the results of the election of the European parliament turned out even worse for them. In spite of (or because of?) this game.

Abobo's Big Adventure

abobo01.png
Team Bobo 2012
Genre: Action
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Where to begin with this game? By stating the fact, I never owned a NES and therefore know almost all of the characters in this game (a definitive tribute to just that system) only by hearsay? Or that as a general rule I despise flash-games, because they are often rather half-baked concepts in an uninspired endless loop? How much I normally hate mindless violence used for mindless violence sake? That I wonder yet again why the baddies even bother with kidnapping someone instead of finally accepting that this will always end in blood and tears? Impatient people will surely already be glancing at the rating and might start to be wondering by now…

Advanced Lawnmower Simulation

lawnmower01.png
Gardensoft 1988
Genre: Simulation
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Freeware
System: ZX Spectrum

It's the things which are fun in real life which usually translate well into great computer games. And you know what's really fun? Lawnmowing. Don't you just love going back and forth, tweaking your route till perfection, while at the same time, you have plenty of time to think about all kinds of things? At last, Advanced Lawnmower Simulation gives you the opportunity to do all this in front of your computer!

Adventure

advent_000.png
Mr Creosote 1996
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 0/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

The first text adventure I wrote. Story has been ripped off a Mickey Mouse comic with just the character names removed.

Puzzles are virtually nonexistent, the 'parser' only understands commands which have been hardcoded into the game.

Alien Bash II

alienbash201.png
Glen Cumming / Myles Jeffery 1995
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

The home computer era had a shitload of free games which, as spyware had basically not been invented yet, came with no strings attached. Most of it was rather unspectacular and not particularly worth playing. Case in point: the first Alien Bash, an ok, but unremarkable shooter set on the decks of an alien spaceship. Instead of Alien Breed, Alien Bash II now takes its cues from Chaos Engine.

Alien Carnage

carnage01.png
Apogee 1994
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Alien Carnage, also known as Halloween Harry, is a sidescrolling action platform game. The story is that the earth is being taken over by aliens and the alien leader tells the goverment that if they do not surrender the planet in 24 hours, innocent civilians will be taken hostage and turned into zombies to help take over the planet. Harry is called upon to help save the people held captive by the aliens and to destroy the alien menace.

Anchorhead

anchorhead01.png
Michael S. Gentry 1998
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

This inheritence came as a surprise: Even your husband Michael had never heard of these distant relatives of his before. Now, the last of the family Verlac has died and Michael is the only remaining heir of the nice estate in the small New England town of Anchorhead. Since this goes along well with his teaching job, you two decide to move there.

Ancient Domains of Mystery

adom00.png
Thomas Biskup 2002
Genre: RPG
Rating: 4.5/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

If there is one game that professional developers and publishers hate, it's Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM). The final version (1.0) released in late 2002, this freeware role-playing game that fits on a single floppy offers an unprecedented depth of character development and a length of gameplay that easily matches the longest games ever released. In fact, ADOM offers more replay value than any game released in the 21st Century, and unlike many of those games, it remains fun no matter how often you replay it.
