Grab your lance, mount your flying ostrich and… joust! Detailed graphics, great animations and a decent simulation of inertia – that was Joust in the arcades. On the Atari 2600, it is… not quite that. More of a reminder how far that system still was from providing an actual arcade experience at home than a fun game on its own right. Gone are the detailed player and enemy sprites; they have been replaced by flat, single-coloured blobs all of which look exactly identical (in the original, the enemies would be riding buzzards) – and the 'unbeatable?' pterodactyl is virtually unrecognisable as such an animal at all. Appropriately, simple two-state animations are used. Might be bearable if at least the gameplay had remained intact.


Judge Dredd

In the remote advanced morrow things are as usual out of hand. Mega City One is engulfed in corruption, violence and mayhem. The streets are potentially unsafe and menacing for innocent law-abiding citizens (are there any left really?). The police can no longer suppress the overwhelming crime wave, and so a new institution is created combining the remaining police officers and the forensic authorities into a solid law enforcement organization whose members are simply called The Judges. You are Judge Dredd, the roughest toughest kid on the block authorized to promptly arrest or execute perpetrators on sight. Your job is to serve the law, keep the city clean and abolish crime one way or the other.

The seemingly everlasting topic of atomic energy has just started being discussed again in Germany... a good reason to examine this slightly dated, but nevertheless deeply meaningful and highly objective educational game by the lobby itself. Of course, being completely impartial and only having the best for mankind in mind, only the pure facts are presented in this vision of a future without atomic energy.

Karamalz is a brand of Malzbier, so what we have here is a promotial game. Promotial games are mostly simple versions of classic arcade games or short Adventures. This one sticks out from the crowd by being a sports game. It's a surprisingly complex ice hockey simulation!

One of the biggest hits in the arcades of the mid-80s, converted to the C64. Most people will know the gameplay from International Karate these days (if at all), but Karate Champ was the game which started it all!

Long before your encounter with wicked Jaffar and conquest of make-belief Persia you used to be a karate martial artist sporting a fancy kimono. Your formerly sworn enemy was a cruel japanese warlord Akuma who having besеt your country had also kidnapped your beloved Princess Mariko. I don't suppose you need further directions now, do you? As far as the old "good guys vs bad guys" tradition you must now follow the trail of Akuma into his fortress situated up on a cliff, defeat a number of his guards along the way who are also trained in karate, and finally vanquish the tyrant himself and save the princess. In this game steel weapons have not been invented yet, so you can only rely on your bare knuckles and feet.

A body is lying at your feet. You've just shot the guy. You may think you've missed the best part of the game, having already committed murder, but fear not – all will be well!

Although it might look like the pressing issue is escaping the scene of crime in time before the police arrive, Keepsake quickly turns into a game of mild surrealism. You meet the fixer who has sold the gun to you – but he's there twice, for some reason, once alive and once dead. Even shooting the still living version of him doesn't really solve this dilemma. And more similarly strange interactions are still waiting for the player on the next screens. What is actually happening here is hinted at in a subtle way all the time, and the well-done epilogue will even spell it out explicitly in case there was still some doubt. The elliptic nature of the game is certainly its main asset – bonus for a good, if gimmicky, idea.
