Frontier: Elite 2

frontier01.png
Gametek 1993
Genre: Simulation
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Shareware
System: PC

Frontier is the sequel to The classic space trading game "Elite". Elite offered one of the first truly open ended games. A game of freedom where you could go and do whatever you pleased with no set storyline or levels. However Elite was also pretty dated by 1993, especially the original polygon wire looking BBC version. So Elite II hit the shelves.

Shuttle: The Space Flight Simulator

Vektor Grafix 1992
Genre: Simulation
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Shuttle is a detailed simulation. Let's look at those words carefully. "Detailed". "Simulation".

We'll start with "simulation". This software is an attempt to simulate the Space Shuttle. Like a flight simulator it tries to accurately recreate that machine in software. You typically get two types of simulators in computer software. The first is the Forza/Gran Turismo type of simulator where, sure, cars and tracks have been measured with lasers to within a micron of their lives, and some people will play them with a steering wheel and pedals, but most will just use a gamepad. And that's fine, because mostly they are just about having fun.

Space Hulk

Electronic Arts 1993
Genre: Strategy, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC, Amiga (OCS/ECS)

There is a moment in James Cameron's 1986 film Aliens, when the marines are advancing through murky dark corridors. They are being commanded by their lieutenant from the comfort of his armoured personnel carrier. Each marine is equipped with a video camera which shows their point of view. In the APC the lieutenant views a row of monitors, each one displaying a video feed from a marine. Eventually the aliens with big pointy teeth and sharp claws come out of the shadows and attack the marines. One by one the marines are killed off, and their video feeds turn to static, as the lieutenant looks on helplessly.

Supaplex

Think!Ware Development 1991
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

A computer themed boulder dash clone. Can be very frustrating to learn the moves, and very frustrating in level design, but is very rewarding when you 'solve' a level. Helpfully, levels can be skipped, so you can avoid that puzzle game 'brick wall'. Another helpful feature is that levels are not time limited. Original Boulder Dash, I am looking at you.

Ultima VI: The False Prophet

ultvi01.png
Origin 1990
Genre: RPG
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

The avatar is summoned back to Britannia, but this time it is a trap set by the gargoyles, demon like creatures that have attacked the kingdom, starting a war that will only end with the death of the one they call the false prophet.
