Campaign

0_cpintro_000.png
Empire Software 1992
Genre: Simulation, Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

I still remember buying Campaign twenty years ago quite well. In autumn 1992, I was still in my first quarter at the maintenance division of the German army. After the basic training, I read one of common gaming magazines and found an ad for Campaign in there.

Christoph Kolumbus

go_000.png
Software 2000 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC, Amiga (OCS/ECS)

The strategic business simulation Christoph Kolumbus was public in February 1994 by "Software 2000" on the PC and the Amiga. On the Internet, the game is sometimes called a clone of The Patrician, because it was designed by Martin Wölk who was also involved in said other game. I see more parallels with the Amiga/C64 game Spoils of War from the year 1992, though, because the game is about discovering surrounding islands from one's home base, settle and develop them, but selling goods and building new ships or military units is only possible in the home base. A free form of trade like in The Patrician where you can buy and sell goods whereever you want is not possible, you can only trade at your home harbour.

Colony Wars 2492

Black Legend Software GmbH 1996
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Colony Wars 2492 is a game which has fallen into oblivion over the years. Some gamers will still remember that there used to be a game in which you had to build robots from three components, but most of them will not even remember the name or they confuse it with Akte Europa.

Conquest of the New World

cnwmain_000.png
Interplay 1996
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Conquest of the New World is a highly addictive game. Newcomers should start out playing the tutorial which explains the way the game works and the battles. The tactical battles can also be practised by selecting the battle demo from the main menu.

Magic of Endoria

00_Titel.png
German Design Group / Sunflowers 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

When Magic of Endoria was released in June 1994, it belonged to a relatively new kind of games which let their players build and administrate a dungeon. This makes Magic of Endoria a kind of forerunner of the well-known Dungeon Keeper. Although Magic of Endoria was released as a C64 and a PC version, both games are quite different. This anomaly was caused by the success of games like Dune 2 (late 1992) and Warcraft (early 1994) which founded the real time strategy genre and started a hype. While the C64 version stayed a turn-based game as initially planned, the PC variant received an obstructive real-time corset in order to ride the wave.

Wiggles

SEK 2001
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Developed by SEK and published in September 2001 by Innonics, Wiggles (released to the English-speaking world as Diggles) was highly praised by the leading publications like PC Games, PC Action and GameStar and it received very good ratings. The game failed on the market, though, because for 2001, it was too demanding hardware-wise. Even today, it can still put quite a load on dual core Pentium chips. The developer SEK tried their hand at another real time strategy game called Paraworld in 2006 and then went bancrupt.
