In Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed, the venerable SSI Gold Box game engine is put through the paces in a space opera adventure in the Buck Rogers universe. In addition to familiar AD&D-based character creation and Gold Box adventuring, the game includes a skill system, story-based experience rewards, and attractive VGA graphics that are inexplicably shrunk to the same small viewport used since Pool of Radiance. A musical score is supported by Soundblaster or Roland hardware.

In every sense but the name, Dragon Wars is a sequel to Interplay's The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate. The game was programmed by "Burger" Becky Heineman, just like the previous game, and the working title all through its development was The Bard's Tale IV. Unfortunately for Heineman and designer Paul O'Connor, Electronic Arts owned the rights to The Bard's Tale and Interplay was severing ties with the publishing giant and going its own way.

Might and Magic was created by a small group of people, led by Jon Van Caneghem in 1987, as the first game of the highly acclaimed New World Computing. The story behind releasing the game sounds almost like a fairy tale. After Might and Magic was finished, Jon Van Caneghem approached numerous publishers, only to be rejected time and time again. He decided to publish the game himself, from his apartment, and it turned to be a surprise hit, selling 5,000 copies the first month. After that, he managed to land a sweet deal with Activision, which enabled New World Computing to remain the publisher, and Activision only handled the logistics.

When SSI started publishing officially-licensed Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games in 1988, the "Gold Box" series came out swinging with Pool of Radiance, which made up for what it lacked graphically with a slavish recreation of the AD&D tabletop rules (including the availability in-game of pages of inscrutable polearms) and an engaging tactical turn-based combat system. The D&D game was no stranger to computer games, having served as the template and rules engine for the earliest hobbyist and even commercial CRPG titles like Ultima, Wizardry, and The Bard's Tale and had been licensed for "official" games in the past.
