3D Spacewars

3d_spacewars_01.png
Graftgold / Hewson Consultants 1983
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

The history of one of the greatest computer game developers begins here: Graftgold! Riding on the first 3D craze and applying it to the current Star Wars hype, 3D Spacewars is exactly what the name suggests: a space shooter in 3D. Of course, on the home computers of the early 1980s, 3D usually simply meant to have flat enemy sprites in three or four different zoom levels which were switched on the fly to simulate changing distance. A technique which never really looked all too convincing, but whose signalling intention is clear enough.

There at the foot of the Glass Hill you shall dispatch your soul underground into dismal dungeons to remotely locate and banish Avelach the Lord of Chaos, who according to this old witch's prophecy shall soon bring down terrible calamities and the end of the world as we know it. Firstly, though, you must overcome his perplexing maze and its ghastly denizens to prove yourself a skilled sorcerer and a worthy opponent...

Back to Skool

Microsphere 1985
Genre: Adventure, Action
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Last year, schoolboy Eric managed to steal his report card from the headmaster's safe. He has taken his time to forge a positive one. Now it's time to get it back into the safe.

A lot has happened on the school grounds over the holidays. It has been split in two sections: a boys school and a girls school (with a fence between them). The boys' building (the only part which could be seen in the prequel Skool Daze) has been expanded, too. There are now more classrooms, more offices, a new assembly hall and (perhaps the most useful innovation) a bathroom. The school has also bought a new safe to replace the old one. This one doesn't have a combination of numbers, but a simple lock. But where has the key been hidden?

Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior

01.png
Palace Software 1987
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum, C64

In those dark ancient times all business was settled with brute force, magic and steel. In our story, however, steel must ultimately prevail. Drax the evil sorcerer threatens to cast a terrible curse upon the people of Jewelled City unless they trade Princess Mariana for their well-being. Without further ado they complied. "Well, that was boring!" - Drax thought. And so he came up with a new bargain for his sordid amusement: the one who defeats a number of his best warriors shall have the Princess back. Many brave souls have perished in vain and, like in all such tales, when all hope seemed lost this champion came...

Casanova

casanova01.png
Iber Soft 1989
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

If I had to describe this game with just one word it would be simply "AAARGH!". But later to that. Ahem. Thou art Casanova, the infamous venetian dandy and the legendary playboy of the XVIII century. Who knows him not? Alas, in this adventure thou art not to seduce and conquer more and more damsels despite thy highest expectations, but rather tend to the consequences of thy many practical jokes, knavery, heresy and fornication. As ye sow, so shall ye reap. Tonight is the night that thou flee from Venice and avoid contact with some of thy old "friends", vexed customers and besotted wives.

Doomdark's Revenge

01.png
Beyond Software 1984
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum
A sequel arriving all too promptly is a sure sign to be cautious. It is true today and it was true 35 years ago, even with shorter development times back then. With Doomdark's Revenge the overall impression isn't so much that it is a sequel already planned when the first one was in the making, but rather that developer Mike Singleton just carried on programming after releasing Lords of Midnight.

Fairlight: A Prelude

fair1.png
The Edge 1985
Genre: Adventure, Action
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Dark forces came upon once happy and prosperous Land of Fairlight! You, a brave and daring adventurer named Isvar have been summoned into the castle, which was once controlled by benevolent King Avars, but is now empty of its former household and filled with foul entities. Turns out the king has been long banished (and probably dead). But the rumors have it there's still one member of the royal family left in the castle, Segar the Sorcerer, whose days are countless, for his knowledge and skills have granted him immortal life, but he is now imprisoned deep within the compound. Your task is to find and set him free, for only he can bring the light and felicity back to the land and restore its former order.

Feasibility Experiment

Channel 8 Software 1983
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Brian Howarth was a force to be reckoned with in the early days of the text adventure genre. Thanks to his deal with Adventure International's king of adventures, Scott Adams, his Mysterious Adventures were everywhere. The series covered a broad range of themes, from fantasy in the style of the first genre classics to murder mysteries, science fiction and horror pieces.

Fighting Warrior

Melbourne House 1985
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Princess Thaya has been kidnapped (doh, give me a break!) by the evil Pharaoh and it's your job to save her. Seriously now, how about you save a puppy or a grandma for a change?! Anyway, your champ is a master stick fighter (kendo?!) and as per hackneyed tradition you must walk a few meters to arrive at Pharaoh's temple where he is planning to sacrifice the princess to gods by burying her alive and en route fight various humanoid creatures summoned by the Pharaoh to hamper you.
