3 Skulls of the Toltecs

3skulls01.png
Revistronic 1996
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Arizona, 1866. Fenimore Fillmore, the young (actually, he looks like he's 12 years old) hero of our story, accidently stumbles across the secret of three golden skulls which unlock the way to the treasure of the Toltecs. One of these skulls is already in his possession. Two other ones have yet to be located, but at least he knows who has them.

Alone in the Dark 3

aitdiii01.png
Infogrames 1994
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

When people start filming a western the local cowboy ghosts seem to dislike the idea and start causing mayhem. The only solution is calling Carnby, who will come, kick some asses, solve absurd puzzles and save an old friend.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show

bbill01.png
Tynesoft 1989
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Summer Games, California Games - you all know these games which consist of somehow sports-related mini games. Then there was was Circus Games - we're already getting a little more obscure here - and later, the same company released Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. And once again, the title says it all, so let's quickly go through the events of this game.

Colorado

Silmarils 1990
Genre: Adventure, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

You are a fearless trapper who seems to have only one reason for being on the west: killing indians and walking a lot. Ok, that were two reasons, but they will be what you’ll be doing on this game. A bit simple game, but which is, as usual with Silmarils, different from the usual.

Der Schatz im Silbersee

silbersee01.png
Linel / Software 2000 1994
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Der Schatz im Silbersee (roughly 'Treasure in the Silver Lake') is one of the best known stories by author Karl May and thus clearly needs no introduction. Phew, great how I got away with not having read that book and still reviewing this game, isn't it?

Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist

pharkas01.png
Sierra 1993
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

There's lots of prejudice against Sierra's Adventure games floating around. Weak game design, embarrasingly childish wannabe-humor and often also (talking about the 'classics') graphics worse than any amateur could do. As much as I support this kind of prejudice, there are exceptions.

Gold Rush!

grush01.png
Sierra 1989
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga, PC (EGA)

Jerrod Wilson, a journalist living in 1848 Brooklyn, apparantely never got over 'losing' his brother Jake who was forced to leave town ten years ago. Now the protagonist receives a letter from this lost relative. Jake has found gold in California and he urges Jerrod to join him there. And it would be much of a game if Jerrod didn't go along with this...

Gunfright

Ultimate Play The Game 1985
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Howdy doody, pardner! Feel like serving the law and shootin' fer good reason? Well then, you came to the right place! Welcome to Black Rock and let's get the business started today! Congratulations, you're now the sheriff Quickdraw, and your task is to clean this old western town of armed villains compromising peace and safety of its citizens. Yep, that's right, it's Gunfright from Ultimate Play The Game, one of the most noted and commonly played games on ZX-Spectrum, where in capacity as town's sheriff you must alone fight the criminal world and put an end to it once and for all.

Kane

Mastertronic 1986
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Plus/4

The myth of the 'wild west' is full of hero figures, usually referred to as 'lone rangers'. All alone they fight all kind of evil (bankrobbers and of course Indians), always with a hand on their gun. That's the true American dream: riding through the prairies, spreading 'true justice'.

Law of the West

law01.png
Accolade 1986
Genre: Adventure, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: C64

You know what would suck even more than living in a town where everyone does not only own a gun and always walks around carrying it, but is also trigger happy? Being the person who is obliged to uphold law and order in such a town. However, in a computer game where the worst thing which can happen to you is the game over screen, it can actually turn into fun.
