Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura

Arcanum00.jpg
Troika Games / Sierra 2001
Genre: RPG
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

At first glance Arcanum looks like a role playing game full of great ideas: Its main attraction is its fantasy world, which is set at the time of an industrial revolution, that is about to turn it into a science fiction setting. It is a refreshingly unique place, full of whimsical magic and technical marvels, that has great potential for interesting twists to age-old cliches: How does an ageless being, like an elf, react to the rise of science, which is about to make the magic, that has kept him alive so far, obsolete? Is there a cheaper workforce than orcs, which can be exploited at will, for they are obviously evil and therefore deserve no less? Or what about safety: Should a wizard, whose magical power has an unpredictable effect on machines, be allowed to get close to steam engines or trains? There are so many new stories that could be told…

Blobby Volley

D. Skoraszewski 2001
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

'Blobby Volley' is another little but neat freeware game. As the name states it's kind of a volleyball game and somewhat resembles a beach volleyball variant. But here it's only one on one.

Blödtris

bloedtris01.png
Philip Winterberg 2001
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Blödtris - or Dumbtris as it's called if you install it in english version (the game can be installed in english or german) - is a game that can be sorted into the Tetris-category. Well... at least the name of it claims that sort of kinship. Now it's a bit difficult to write a proper review about it I have to admit. First of all - this game is not really... well... serious. The goal of it is the same as you have in Tetris - you have to build whole lines, they vanish, you get points and after a certain amount of points you go up one level, which means things go faster and so on and so forth.

Bugged

bugged01.png
Anssi Räisänen 2001
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

It's every player's nightmare: An aspiring IF author (to make matters worse, one who is related to you) asks you to beta test his game. This can be fun, but if the game is really, really bad and if you can't really tell that to the person in question, things get ugly. Bugged is about you playing your cousin's first attempt at writing a game, and not only is it a completely linear set of boring rooms, located in a castle of a bog-standard fantasy kingdom, but pretty much everything imaginable went wrong technically - the game is bugged to the extreme. Most of the puzzle solutions don't work as expected and imagined by the author. So you have to find ways around those bugs. I.e. you exploit other bugs in order to progress.

Building Panic

Yamada No Ana Project 2001
Genre: Action, Puzzle
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Who will be first to finish the walls of their scyscraper? Who is quick enough to beat their opponents and trick the guards? If this sounds like fun to you, you may try a game of Building Panic. One game was more than enough for me.

Catch the Kreis

ctk01.png
Dregenrocks 2001
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Catch the Kreis is a simple, yet fascinating arcade game. It resembles the huge coin-ups of the 70's and that where it draws its fascination from. You're an 'X' (controlled by the cursor keys) hunting a '0' on a board divided into squares. Very hectical - be sure to pump up enough adrenaline! But let's hear what the author has to say about the developement of the different versions (comments from Dregenrocks are in italics):

Payback

Apex Designs 2001
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

When do you get into legal trouble? Running over or shooting at people is a sure way. Though imitating another company's product too closely might also already be enough. You might get away with it in the latter case if you're choosing your steps carefully, as this game teaches us. It also teaches us that with some major bravado, the former can be done without negative consequences as well.

Pudgy

pudgy01.png
Spazz 2001
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

This picture shows Pudgy. Pudgy is neat blob-like creature which lives in a strange world. A very harsh and hostile world in fact. Hardly fitting for a peaceful creature like him! But well... his instinct to survive is strong enough to prevent that he gives up himself. So what should he do? He has to find a way out of this world.

TripleA

Sean Bridges & Others 2001
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

So many enthusiasts try creating their own games. Very few ever come to a stage which produces something worthwhile. It's not a new phenomenon, but the Internet makes it almost painfully visible through all those hopelessly outdated websites laying out hugely ambitious plans and promising sweeping updates 'soon' – that announcement dating back many years.

Ugh!

ughletzt_001.png
Asmodean 2001
Genre: Strategy, Puzzle
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

It's the year 2023/24. After a devastating nuclear war which wiped out almost all life the only 2 survivors, Borislav and William Jefferson leave their respective caves in the Himalaya to take a look at what's left. After some days they happen to meet on a tiny path, surrounded on both sides by gaping cliffs. Only one can go on, the other must jump into oblivion. But how decide who that will be? Well, why not with a board game called UGH.
