Alias 'The Magpie'

Alias00.png
J. J. Guest 2018
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

Good humour takes proper setup and precise timing: Leading up to and delivering a punchline is an art form of its own which is harder to master than most people tend to believe. Yet it is one of the most important skills that separates the amateur jokester from the true comedian. Of course this is also what makes or brakes any video game that tries to make its audience laugh and it is especially the adventure game genre that has a tradition of delivering prime examples to both the best and the worst in comedy. One of the former is Alias 'The Magpie', a piece of interactive fiction telling the story of a hilarious art heist in a masterful way.

Bogeyman

Elizabeth Smyth 2018
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

Darkness holds one of‭ the‭ ‬primal fears of mankind.‭ ‬But why are we afraid of it‭? ‬We are afraid,‭ ‬because something might be lurking in the‭ ‬utter blackness‭ ‬and when it is trying to harm us‭ ‬we will not see‭ ‬it coming.‭ ‬Since it easier for us to deal with the tangible than with the abstract,‭ ‬we tend to antropomorphise our feelings.‭ ‬And this leads to the birth of the bogeyman,‭ ‬our manifested anxieties.‭ ‬Especially children with their more vivid imagination combined with all their insecurities‭ – ‬born out of inexperience‭ – ‬are prone to conjuring them up.‭ ‬And since your fear can be turned against you, parents use it to make their children behave –‭ ‬as cruel as this might be.‭ ‬Yes fear is a powerful tool:‭ ‬Whomever you are afraid of has control over you.‭ ‬And this is one of the main themes of‭ Bogeyman‭.

Flowers of Mysteria

David Sweeney 2018
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Flowers of Mystaria is a very classic text adventure. A rather solid example of its kind, because there are next to no bugs, it is quite playable and it has a decent length (although it is finishable in one sitting). Yet it has one problem: It just is not overly exciting and could have used a bit more polish.

Golden Wing

Copper Sky 2018
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga
Some seminal game ideas just never die. Some have become so common that they are more or less in considered to be in public domain by now. Like Asteroids. It's a concept which just works: fly your spaceship around the (single) screen, blast asteroids, but be careful about it, because they will break apart into several smaller pieces which may go off on trajectories you never expected. Then, to spice things up, add some ufos etc. Which is exactly what Golden Wing does. In 2018, no less.

Junior Arithmancer

Michael Z. Spivey 2018
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

Anyone who has done some serious maths will tell you that it can be quite magical. Even with the most basic of operations you can do some impressive tricks with astonishing results. It is that feeling of wonder you get, when you finish a long set of calculations that end up with surprising – simple but true – answers which makes people love mathematics. Just think of the flow of solving a problem, that single moment when everything fits together and you see all the connections, and you might know what I mean. And this magic moments is exactly what Junior Arithmancer is all about.

Six Silver Bullets

William Dooling 2018
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

One of the most exciting things about unravelling a mystery is piecing your clues together and trying to make sense of it all. Just think of the fun you can have while coming up with your own interpretation of what is going on or your very own version of the truth. You do not have to be right, on the contrary coming up with a theory which turns out to be wrong can be even more entertaining because it only makes the mystery deeper. And the deeper it gets the more curious and therefore involved you get.

Terminal Interface for Models RCM301-303

Terminal0.png
VigiMech Corporation 2018
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

Imagine a rather bizarre setup: An industrial mech with remote control, which still relies on having a passenger on board, whose sole purpose is tagging items for the controller at the other end of the line. Since naming things is not that overly exciting you thankfully take over the role of the controller in this game. So your task will be remote controlling the robot around a research complex, ordering it to shove things out of the way and punch the one or the other object, while listening to the comments of your on-board companion.
