While I appreciate the idea... it's a copyright nightmare.

Apparently several sites have popped up with archived versions of old geocities pages:

http://www.oocities.com/
http://reocities.com/
http://geocities.ws/
http://geociti.es/neighborhoods.html

Ucoz seems to be in the process of putting up a geocities archive: http://geocities-closing.com/

...and apparently the japanese version of geocities is still alive & well: http://geocities.yahoo.co.jp/

There is one more service available, Tripod from Lycos! That's where I made magic happen (In a non sexually related way).

I've got old games from geocities pages. Including some weird programs, like one to see which christian religous labor you could do (seems to be for anglicans). And I think I left somewhere a few of those ESP training programs (trust me, they don't work. Sadly) and similar things.

Thanks for the reminder! Since Tuss doesn't want to do anything with it, I quickly snatched his site. Which turned out to be harder than I expected... after saving a couple of pages, Geocities started showing 503 errors which disappeared again after an hour or so. Then, I could save some pages again before the error started showing up again and so on.

Just a heads up, geocities closes tomorrow. If any of you have anything you want off of any geocities site, you'd better hurry up & grab it.

Yeah, especially since it's a hell of a lot easier to do it by going into your file manager (where you have the links to all (or at least most) of your files on a single page), the right click the links to the files & "save link/target as..". Yahoo is just chock full of dimwits.

To quickly download your published files, visit your GeoCities web site, right-click on each page, and choose Save Page As... from the menu that appears. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save. Learn more about downloading your files.

This paragraph is comedy gold :D

They just sent out emails about it, and included the official date of the closing, october 26th 2009.

Quote:
Important notice: GeoCities is closing.
Dear Yahoo! GeoCities customer,

We're writing to let you know that Yahoo! GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009.

On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

What You Need to Do
If you'd like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you've posted online, you need to act now by choosing one of the following options:

• Move your site to Yahoo! Web Hosting.
We know your files are important to you, and we want to make moving to Web Hosting as easy and affordable as we can. For a limited time, you can move your files automatically, take advantage of terrific features like a personalized domain name and email, even redirect your GeoCities web address to your new site — all for only $4.99 a month for a full year.

For more information and complete terms, please see our special offer now.

• Download your files to your own computer.
With your pages and images saved offline, you can re-create your site with any hosting provider.

To quickly download your published files, visit your GeoCities web site, right-click on each page, and choose Save Page As... from the menu that appears. Choose a location on your computer to save your files, then click OK or Save. Learn more about downloading your files.

Don't Wait
Please be aware that after October 26, your GeoCities files will be deleted from our servers, and will not be recoverable. If you'd like to save your files, you must download them now or move to Yahoo! Web Hosting. If you need assistance, please visit the help center.

We want to thank you for being a GeoCities customer, and hope you continue to enjoy our other Yahoo! services.

Best regards,

The Yahoo! GeoCities team

That last post was just a bot selling WoW gold.

But now I think about it, it's the first time I see a bot on this forum.

Personally, safety/security of email means very little to me. Almost the only thing I use email for is signing up for websites, the most any hacker would get out of the attempt is a forum password or two.

Don't worry, I can fix that for you. What is your yahoo email address?

People that love Yahoo! make me physically ill.

Everbody should use what we or she wants to use. I personaly hate TV. But I don't try to convince other people to hate it too.

I would just like to illustrate how unsafe and how unreliable yahoo accounts really are. All it takes is a false report of abuse, as there is no review.
As I understand it, facebook operates the same way.

...and in any case, Google is about 10000000000000000% worse than everything else anyway ;)

Yahoo was probably my 2nd or 3rd email acct ever (not counting the ISP one, which I never did use). My first ever acct was with a long-gone site called cheqmail, which had shitloads of domains to choose from. I also had a hotmail acct when back when, but I'm not sure if that was just before or just after yahoo. I also had a lycos & an excite acct back then (my lycos acct is still fully functional, not sure about my excite one), and several fly-by-night email companies.
I still use my yahoo email acct as a reserve one, but don't use it very often. Likewise I still use yahoo's tv listings as a backup for when zap2it is down, but not very often. The only other thing I use yahoo for is local movie listings, as I find it to be more complete & accurate than any other sources I've found.

I don't love Yahoo. Why should I? I'm just using their webmail since ever, and it is the mail I've given always to everybody, not needing to worry if I change to another or not.

When I created it there was no google or anywhere to create a good webmail, and I didn't like using the mail the internet company gave me, as it would exist only as long as I were their client.

My yahoo mail account is more than six years old (I have it since I have internet, but I no longer recall how long I've had internet) and is still alive and working.

It was one of my first web based email accounts as well, but it was nuked by Yahoo after 5 years. Happens all the time to long standing accounts.
