Ranting away...

I've been gone for 12 days, and before I left, I placed a notice about the fact that downloads would be disabled on the main page and on every download page. I just finished deleting the 119 e-mails of people complaining that a particular download didn't work

I don't know if you received my ICQ message, but I actually replaced your download script (which was producing errors because of incorrect chmod of your log files) with a static page placing the message about the downloads being offline in the centre of the page! Now you experience what happened to me when my ftp downloads somehow died - stupidity in its purest form

I got your message; many thanks for that. I was trying frantically to finish up a few things here and didn't give it much thought.

It's just so damn frustrating: did all the people forget how to read?

In case this helps you at least a bit: even I - even though I removed all download links from my site - receive some occasional e-mails at the moment asking why the download doesn't work. Huh? Which fucking download link are these people talking about?

:o Now that's really ridiculous... The good news is that more and more people are commenting on my reviews, arguing with my conclusions. It's strange: there's a group of people who actually reads the whole review, and then there's a much larger group of people who don't bother to read a simple one-liner...

Yes, maybe there will be a change in the audience of our sites now - it would be all for the better, at least as far as I'm concerned...

I would not complain... However, I give it very little chance, considering that people ignore the fact you don't have any download links to begin with. It would be interesting to know how many e-mails like that is MobyGames receiving ;).

Well, it could be 'old visitors' who have still seen the former download links. And there are still quite a lot of hints on the site that it 'once' featured game downloads: the disclaimer, the FAQ etc. I don't think the people who ignore a bold text above my news (saying it is a review site with no downloads) will read those 'hidden' references though, so it is kind of strange. Actually, I answered one of these e-mails and sent the (C64) game to the visitor: he had found a section on the C64 help page telling the text command to download something but it of course didn't work - had to give him credit for trying this command line ;)

Seems like you were right: people ask for games no matter what the site is and has been! In this case, a pure review site without a real design or any screenshots - just reviews. Still, people are asking for the games. How utterly stupid :(

I love that site! It's one of the best review sites around, and while sometimes I don't fully agree with their reviews, their consistency is almost legendary. I would've never thought people would ask them for game downloads :(.

Since you're not interested in Amiga, you shouldn't like that site :P

Maybe the presentation is different, but I found that the gameplay is pretty much the same, at least for those games I played in DOS and they reviewed for Amiga.

Maybe the broken download links attracted them - that is a sign of quality on warez sites, isn't it? ;)

Hehe... Probably :)

I always got a kick of it when someone invited me to join a warez ring, but this is the first one who asked me after the downloads were disabled :)

You don't actually think this person read that the downloads are disabled, do you? ;)
