now granted DOS was far from a perfect OS, but thank god for Dosbox and PCEM

anyone else miss the older days of computer use?

DOS surely was/is an awful operating system. Though the nice thing about those days was really that it was all so transparent. I felt I actually understood what is going on inside that computer. When something went wrong (not "if"), I felt I had a chance to take a dive, find the root cause and fix it myself. This, for sure, is something I miss.

I don't "miss" DOS, because I "missed" DOS.
I never had access to a PC in the DOS days. I had apple IIs at school & library, then got a tandy coco3, then eventually a win98se machine. I've dealt with DOS a few times, but mostly just trying to get some bargain bin games working when I got the 98se machine.
That said though, the coco3 did have a version of DOS if you got a disck drive for it (which I did). I originally got some paint prog on disc, but that sucked beyond belief, so I returned it and got Rogue. I've been hooked on roguelikes ever since.

So, which one is the best (TM)?

Difficult to choose.
Versions of basic rogue with simple tile graphics are fu for a quick fix, but get old fast.
I'm not a big fan of the hack family of games, they have too much going on.
I like the xrogue, super rogue, and advance rogue games which split the difference, the main problem is that windows builds are rare and tend to have weird keymappings vs other rogue games.

Then there's the world of roguelikes with overworlds. Like larn, adom, and the angband family.
The pixel dungeon family of games on android are what I wind up playing the most these days, great way to kill time on breaks at work.

Then of course, there are even ones on consoles. Sega genesis/megadrive had fatal labyringht, master system and gamegear had dragon crystal, GBA/NDS had pokemon dungeon, other nintendo system had the various mystery dungeon games that pokemon dungeon was based on.

Funny, I'd argue that ADOM is pretty much a NetHack descendant.

Have you played the new Duelist character introduced in Shattered Pixel Dungeon since version 2.0? I'm not so sure yet what to think of it. Most special weapon abilities it can use are rather plain or even crap. And the monk specialisation makes zero sense in my view. Why have a character class which is all about using weapons, but then have it specialise in essentially using... none?

I only had an old version of shattered installed (0.5 or so). I just installed the new version and tried it. It took a while just to unlock that char (hard to equip a level 2 weapon when the RNG won't GIVE you one to pick up!).I've only had a chance to play that car for a little bit so far, it seems ok so far, though you're right about the concept of a weapons based class having a weaponless option is pointless.
