Banshee

Banshee is a very late arrival in the genre of shooters. In 1994, the gaming industry started moving everything towards 'three-dimensional' games, and classic concepts like this one slowly died out. Thankfully, this genre (at least the subgenre of 'vertical shooters') got one final hit with this game.


Curse of Enchantia

1992. Sierra had left the Amiga market (only to return silently later again, but that's another story), other companies tried to fill the gap. Core Design (these days known as the makers of horrible action games featuring big breasts) did it most successfully - they almost perfectly took Sierra's place with their Adventures! Not so much in serial output, but certainly concerning the quality of their products. Does that mean they made great classics with intriguing stories and witty puzzles which stood the test of time? Well, not exactly.


Darkmere: The Nightmare's Begun

The Darkmere, some sort of curse, has come over the land. Good thing the local king is a trusted hero! Well, it would be, if he hadn't grown old and fragile by now. So he hands his magic sword (with vampiric qualities, healing its wielder when it strikes an evil creature) and the responsibility over to his son Ebryn. Whose task it is now to defeat the evil dragon responsible for the mess.


Dragonstone

Chances are, you've never heard of Dragonstone. Released only on a dying computer platform whose parent company had just folded, it never became available anywhere else. So is this the undiscovered gem we've all been hoping to unearth in all these years? To be honest, I wouldn't have been able to tell you until now. It's been sitting on my shelf forever, but my memories of it could only have been described as vague at best. Maybe not the best sign, indicating it may not have been all that memorable, but then, let's give it a fair chance.


Heimdall 2: Into the Hall of Worlds

Again Loki is preparing to start the ragnarok, just this time he got the help of some strange monsters which seem to come from nowhere. Your job is finding the way through Yggdrasil, to recover the pieces of an amulet from another world which is the only thing powerful enough to stop him.


Monty Python's Flying Circus

My brain hurts! A Gumby stars in this genre combo from British publisher Virgin Games. Following the stream of consciousness logic of Terry Gilliam's cartoon bits found in the series, the Gumby's head is planted on a fish body for some levels and re-attached to his human body later again (only to be put on a bird later), so that the player is treated both with Jump'n'Run and (underwater and aerial) Shooter parts.

A movie has been stolen – save the premiere by retrieving it. In the usual spirit of the genre, this is just an excuse for regular Jump & Run gameplay: The 'plot' only defines the setting; in this case, a film studio. Which, in turn, is yet another excuse to have some out-of-this-world settings: Apart from the 'behind the sets' levels, there are, among other things, haunted castles, a giant room and a space level.


Rick Dangerous

Another ordinary action game. But what makes it special to me is the fact that I spent days, weeks and month in front of my Amiga playing this particular game! Why? Well, to be honest mainly because it was available! I simply didn't have that many games back then. But beside the emotional component, there are also objective arguments for this game!


Tomb Raider

It may be one of the less clever ideas I've had, but I'm gonna try and write up Tomb Raider. The truly beautiful people among us (and I don't mean here at TGOD) often suffer from a defeatist, or fatalist streak in their contemporaries, in the sense that they are rarely approached in a casual manner, due to the assumption that the beauty in question must have lots of beautiful friends already, therefore rendering the unsolicited attentions of the common plebe superfluous. Add a touch of fear of being rebuffed or ridiculed, and presto: Dr Oetker's Instant Loneliness Sour Whip.
